The Aaltos

Today I am gonna tell you about an architect I truly admire : Alvar Aalto, and his wife Aino Aalto.

Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer.  In 1916, he then enrolled to study architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology. His studies were interrupted by the Finnish Civil War, in which he fought. On 6 October 1924, Aalto married the architect Aino MarsioHis architectural work, throughout his entire career and together with his wife, would design not only the building but the interior surfaces, furniture, lamps, and glassware as well. His furniture designs are considered Scandinavian Modern, an aesthetic reflected in their elegant simplification and concern for materials, especially wood. His work reflects a deep desire to humanize architecture through an unorthodox handling of form and materials that was both rational and intuitive. They are considered modernists.

I love the way he pays attention to every little details, designing every space, every bit of furniture, from the table to the stairs, so that the space would be the most efficient and pleasant to live in and use. His work is also marked by the uses and effects of the light. He is definetly one of my go to architect and I am often using him when I am looking for inspiration: The Viipuri library,  that and that are a some projects I am using and love the go back to.
